In today's popular music climate, saxophone is indeed a rare species. The fate of modern saxophonists is almost always a life sentence in smooth jazz or a back seat in an r&b horn section. It's hard to imagine that not so long ago the pop charts were peppered with hits by the likes of Jr. Walker, King Curtis and Grover Washington, Jr.. It's a fair estimation that modern saxophonists are almost never considered when thinking of singer/songwriters but that is exactly what is discovered on Brian "Breeze" Cayolle's latest release State Of My Heart - a singer/songwriter in the form of a serious saxophonist.

Truly a labor of love, Cayolle recorded State of My Heart in New Orleans and Los Angeles with longtime friend and collaborator, pianist Bruce Malament. Both men have had long careers performing and writing with an enviable list of music masters. This experience and versatility shines through on the eight tracks of State of My Heart. Each song is a sophisticated well-crafted gem performed to soulful perfection. Elements of folk, gospel, soul, latin jazz, and r&b, can be heard throughout with Cayolle himself the defining factor in each piece. His distinctive sand on blue velvet voice ranges from plaintive to powerful as the lyrics plea for peace (Darkness Into Light), seek solace (State of My Heart) and issue a lovers warning (Don't Burn Your Bridges). As a saxophonist, Cayolle is arguably one of the most significant players alive. Deeply rooted in jazz and r&b, his strong roots allow him to swing powerfully in any style. Cayolle takes his time in the sultry groove of Free & Easy, breathes fire into the sleek funk of Most Of All and burns through the samba rhythms of Latin Eyes (Reprise). Throughout State of My Heart, Cayolle performs on an arsenal of wind instruments with a league of masterful musicians. The end result is seductive, earthy, refined and certainly Brian "Breeze" Cayolle's most definitive musical statement.

Brian "Breeze" Cayolle is endorsed by E.M. Winston saxophones.
